HOW TO MAKE AND WEAR A HAREM PANT

When I first saw a pair of Harem pants , I thought NO WAY! But as trends finally become fashion after the kinks have been removed, I usually fall on the fashion hand grenade with everyone else. It took me a while to find them presented in a fresh, ecletic way, but it finally happened. Forever 21's Twelve by Twelve Vintage Garden ( no, they didn't pay me to say this) - I saw the perfect mix of vintage style mixed with Harems! Too cool ! Here is my version and how I made them !

FIRST : I grabbed an old broomstick style FULL skirt from my skirt pile.
SECOND : I put it on. I leaned forward and grabbed about a foot down from my crotch and pinned it.
THIRD : I layed it out and doubled it over long-ways, and cut a deep U shape from the center, leaving the legs full.
FOURTH : I turned it inside out, and pinned the cut area in place to create 2 legs. I stitched them up (by hand while watching a Buffy re-run)
FIFTH : I put it on right side out, and tied a knot on each leg side. Make the knot lay flat. This may take a few tries, but it will determine how your legs will lay properly.
SIXTH : Turned them inside-out again, and stitched a 1/2 " hem for elastic. I left the hole where the knot is to thread the elastic through. I was out of elastic, so I just used a ribbon instead! Use a big safety pin, attached to the end of the ribbon to pull it through easily. Slip em on, tie the ribbon , blouse out the legs and Done !

YOU JUST MADE A HAREM PANT !!!

There are many different styles and lengths of this pant. Some are full, Some are more tapered. You get to pick the style you like best ! Mine are actually called RAI style, short and folksy.

Here are some examples. You can alter the length as you desire !

HOW TO AVOID LOOKING "COSTUMEY" :

1. Avoid the Alladdin look by steering away from ankle bells, Over accessorizing, Scarves and the Genie shoe. Hats look great with harems !
2. Mix them with a vintage look to make them look fresh and current. Such as a lace top, straw hat, Flower brooches, pearls, simple cardigans, or even a small floral print, as long as the pant remains the focus.
3.. Consider the Shoe! Harems shorten the leg, so keep shoes simple and try a peep-toe pump. Ankle straps will make you appear shorter, but harems look great with Gladiators and a simple tank!
I have seen them on tall, petite, shorter, and full figures. They all rock !
4.. Keep your top simple. The focus is on the pant! This look is terrific for ladies with a larger upper torso ! Pair them with a fitted jacket or top, it looks awesome !

Here are a few examples from latimes.com

my favorite !

Some great sources for how to make , And how to wear harems are :
ehow.com , shira.net , wikihow.com , tribe.net , and the great DIY network.
Just type in how to make harem pants .
U Tube has great tips on how to wear them also.
However, my inspiration is from F21's Twelve by Twelve Vintage Garden. Check it out for really cool vintage inspired outfits !

I made these pant in about 1 hour. I added a Vintage lace blouse and a thrifted knit black lace cardi for contrast. It was hard to lay off the accessories, as I love em, but the hat and simple pearl drop earring were enough. My shoes "grounded" the look by being black, but the florette on the toe kept them in a vintage mode. I think they look great belted, also or with flowy layers. That will be my next try.

HOW TO UPGRADE YOUR STRAW HATS:

Take a wide, knit head band and pull it over your hat to create a wide band in any color. You can pick these up at any dollar store / drug store usually in 3 packs for a couple bucks. I pinned a contrasting flower on the side. Wa-La! A new hat !

IN SUMMARY : I always know an outfit is "working" when I feel great in it. I felt trendy, but not costumey in this look. I don't do How-To's very often, so if anyone has a question, I'll be happy to answer! Honestly, I am a "guesser" when it comes to sewing. This project turned out all right. And, when I tire of the Harem trend, I will cut it off and make a skirt! A two for one! That's MY kind of cost cutting!!! If you are wondering how this trend would look on you, go to U-Tube. There are alot of women showing us how they wear their harems. The fun part for me was that there are Sooo many different types to choose from. I believe anyone can pull off the dreaded HAREM !   *Reva*

THE $10.00 OUTFIT !

This outfit was  $10.oo ! The Bitten shirt, thrifted $3.oo, The skirt, thrifted $4.oo, Boots, thrifted for $3.oo at half-price day, Goodwill. A simple, nothing special outfit in Neutrals. I got a compliment on the boots at the bank, and when asked where I got them, I proudly said " I thrifted them!"  I love to brag on a great bargain!

The Trench was $6.oo, and the Hat was two, but I don't count them as part of the outfit, as they are really extras! I rationalized it that way! This top will see alot of wear this summer. I wore it last weekend with a floral dress and boots.

I was supposed to get my "Veins Done" last year, but "shyed" away from surgery. Now that I'm blogging, it really makes me see how weird they are , not to mention painful. It usually takes vanity to get me to do something I should really be doing for my health! As a hiker, the pain can be really bad. Next stop , by, by nicotine ! Addictions are tough ! Especially shopping addiction ;) !

I really like boots without socks.
( See Big Squiggles ? - I've even named them. Motivational speaker Wayne Dyer says to make friends with your supposed "defects" so I gave em a sweet name!  Their new name is gonna be "Dust", or maybe just "Gondi" ! )

I also wore a pair of my favorite earrings from World Market, and a bangle from Sears clearance.

80's Skirt / When I Grow Up

Fashion Blogging is a two fold effort for me. 1. I love fashion. 2. I want to be a portrait photographer when I grow up. Thus the crazy angles and sometimes over-load of photos! I've always loved both, and since I am at a mid-life turning point - just wait, it will happen to you, too - I know I'm never too old to do whatever I love.

This skirt is from the mid 80's and the print is so cool and colorful that I had to wear it again. I know skirts are either Way short or Way long right now, but this print is too pretty to part with. I am currently and bravely editing some of my skirts. This one may turn into harem pants, which I swore were the ugliest things in the world til I saw some paired with vintage florals and structured jackets. I fell in love with the look! My kind of fashion! A mosh pit of styles. Today I am gonna make some. I'm not sure how this skirt will end up being edited but once I hit the creative zone, we'll see. I really may do a floral harem instead. I bought the coolest pants from F21's Twelve by Twelve collection called Vintage Garden, and am in love with the entire look! The pants arrived too big, and since the F21's in Cinti don't have them, I'm bravely altering them. Wish me luck!

THE PANTS !

I started to snap my photos earlier, but was interrupted by the lawn mower. So I ran my errand, and while flying through the forest eating a left-over chocolate and cream easter egg, The egg fell apart in my hand and landed in my lap. When I got out of the car covered in white goop, I decided to check the mirror first and had white goo running down my chin as well. Thank goodness there was a restroom handy. I looked like I'd just had car sex. Boy that cream center dried fast. That's just a typical moment for me.

My Outfit: A Mish Mosh of thrifted items. "CFM" Sandals, Sears. Bag, World Mkt.

Eclectic Cinched Boho Hippie ?

It all started with the shoes.

A pair of Seychelles I bought several years ago. They may be the best made mules on the planet ! The bottom is hardwood. Better than my furniture for sure . Then a little white box - well really a Big white box - arrived at my door with F 21 tape on it. It was like my birthday and Christmas all in one silly box ! I snatched a long awaited ( 9 days ) Maxi out and threw it on. I bought more than one, as I see many possibilities for them this summer !  As I snapped a shot of the shoes , I realized why Hippies like maxi's. The hair on my legs needed to be mowed more than my grass did. Waves of Grain hair blowing in the wind !  Ahhh... Summer .......

I know people don't like to hear about what you don't like about your body, so I'll try to only throw this out once. I don't like my arms. They are about the same size as my thighs. Think running back. Long, skinny legs with big arms and chest, minus the cute butt ! I tend to wear alot of light, long sleeve tops or shirts to cover them. Actually, it's better for my skin , too! Yeah, right !

My favorite accessory, a locket by @bstract for Target. It says "Fortune favors the Brave" inside, and "Hold on to your Dreams" etched on the back.

Double Happiness !

I am not driven as much by trends as I used to be, though I think I finally landed the Perfect boots / booties? for this Summer! They arrived with the maxi's and will be revealed this weekend for sure ! I usually dress for my mood and love to mix styles. I love to add chandalier earrings to a simple T, or mix vintage with boho. It's fun to be a girlie girl one day and a hippy chick the next ! Since my "No More Spending" mantra will be in effect til July, I can take the effort spent looking for the perfect piece and work what I have already.

My Outfit :  Maxi dress, F21. - Tunic, Old Navy. - T, No Boundaries. - Belts, Kohl's / Another dress tie.

My Pink Bonnet

Molly Ringwald has nothing on me ! I love this pink hat. I paid a dollar for it last year and since I love hats so much , this seemed like the perfect Easter Bonnet .

My day was spent doing a whole lot of nothing . I finally watched Slum Dog Millionaire . I highly recommend it. The message is a great one. The church I attend is over 250 miles away, but I got to wish my Mom a Happy Easter .

Sweater: Sears. T-shirt dress: Kohl's. Glasses: W-mart. Earrings: ?. Pendant: HHI, Coligny Plaza Shop.

Leggings: Rue 21,  Keds: ?,  Cat: Buddy, our neighbor's.

I'm working on a project I can't wait to share !!! I'm almost finished and I hope you'll be Amazed ! ;)
